Almost nobody uses pen and paper to report on a news story today. Even names and such are usually asked at the start of recording and just edited out later. Some still use the small spiral notebook to record names but that is about all.

Pen and paper still have a role in the reporting process. First as a backup to the failure of the electronic devices.....although I will admit to having back-up electronic recorders to handle this crises..... Secondly; you may need to draw diagrams and such that we can't as yet do effectively on laptops and the like. You can use your business cards in a pinch, but they can get lost in the shuffle. Yes, the small pocket spiral binder is still with us and worth carrying along; you just never know.....
