The Permanent Ongoing Participation of the General Public at the United Nations Initiative

By Maurice Ali, President: IAIJ Inc.

The idea of general public participation at the UN has always been mused as the ideal in global democracy but a pragmatic impossibility; that is until now. IAIJ formally submitted a speaking topic for the Sustainable Development Goals held at the UN in September (2015) and while we were not selected, the idea of general public participation at the United Nations is still a desirable goal that deserves attention and advocacy. The reality today is that it is technologically possible to connect the world through their cell phones and desktop computers to have actual participation on a global scale for true world-wide participation of anyone interested in the global issues that are relevant to all. IAIJ’s involvement in this type of advocacy came from its close structure to a possible entity that would allow for this type of participation within the UN charter. Thus IAIJ is formally announcing its initiative to advocate for permanent ongoing participation of the general public at the United Nations!

The last few days were a bit of a think tank on how to structure the initiative at IAIJ as IAIJ itself mirrors best an example of general public participation at the United Nations. The go ahead for this initiative was by majority vote at the IAIJ AGM held on February 12, 2016 where we agreed to continue international advocacy at the UN. Realize that IAIJ is an organization where anyone can join and be a citizen journalist and comes closest to general public participation at the UN with its inclusiveness of membership and broad activity base because it is a journalist organization. As a recognized NGO by the United Nations we are compelled by altruistic reasons to investigate further and promote the concept of permanent ongoing participation of the general public at the United Nations. To this end, I as President of the International Association of Independent Journalists Inc. formally start what we will call “The Permanent Ongoing Participation of the General Public at the United Nations Initiative” which will begin on March 8 (2016). The initiative will comprise investigative journalism, education and advocacy in order to promote the concept of general public participation at the United Nations. As can be seen by our original article submitted to the Sustainable Development Goals preparatory event at the UN in September; the technology is there to make this type of participation a reality. All we need now is lobbying and education on the concept to open a formal dialogue on the issue at the United Nations and explore the possibilities.

We can do this if we have to will to do so; and we do!
