The Ancient Love Affair

By Noel Jones

Ms. Sara Mitchell currently lives in Macon Georgia. Her name is sometimes spelled Sarah Mitchell in historic literature. In 1963 she was employed by the New Yorker magazine as a receptionist. In June 1963 the acclaimed author and Minister Malcolm X wrote her a letter which “displayed charm and flattery” in an effort to recruit Sara as his secretary. She’d shared her admiration to Malcolm X “your recent correspondence is really one of the best written letters that I’ve ever received”. “It too was very poetic, your thoughts were very clear.” For her wanting to be free she told The Minister she had no desire to join any organization. He urged her to come to a meeting of the newly founded Organization of African-American Unity (OAAU). The OAAU first public gathering at the Audubon ballroom on June 28th of the same year, but within several months Ms. Mitchell became an invaluable leader of the OAAU. [p348] This is the beginning of an ‘Ancient’ love affair... For it is time alone who will reveal this mystery which has been hidden from the pages of history books.

One of the most exciting yet hidden and mysterious figures in the life and
history of Malcolm x is one Anas M. Luqman also known as (Langston Hughes savage)[p.5] known today as Abdul Luqman Rahim, who resides in the state of Florida just four hours away from Sarah Mitchell. The facts can be found in the history books on the subject, but the writer has heard this from the horse’s mouth “I did not join the NOI (Nation of Islam) for spiritual reasons I joined because I heard those brothers was about revolution some land for self, things like that” (Luqman) was a Navy man of some talent. The only Black in his class, while in the Navy he contacted Fidel Castro, to imply working with his revolution, he was informed by Fidel “this was not possible do to agreements with USA” he was advised to return after his time was up with USA forces Navy, which luqman did, Luqman was trained by Castro and his personal Trainers, Luqman was a mercenary of great renown yet under the radar of authorities at all times, he was given a letter from Fidel Castro which allowed him to move freely within revolutionary circles. Internationally; he was hired by clandestine operatives in America and foreign countries, he was even commissioned to ‘take out’ certain heads of state, “a few jobs were turned down.“[Abdul Luqman] While overseas Luqman heard of The Nation of Islam and decided this was where he belong; so he traveled to Chicago, where because of his resume he moved up in the security ranks of The NOI, knowing of his mode of operations he was approached by ranking members of Nation of Islam during the turmoil times when Malcolm X was being ostracized. “Sometime in late February, captain Joseph contacted a fruit member named Anas Luqman, James 67x’s roommate, to arranged private meeting.” [P 290] Being an ex-navy man the inner circle of NOI had heard luqman had studied ballistics and was asked to place a bomb in the car of Minister Malcolm, Luqman refused. The relationship between Malcolm and Luqman grew from the time Luqman upon orders went to Malcolm to kill him, pointing a revolver close range of his face Malcolm showed no fear, saying : “if it’s Gods Will Let it be” Luqman being ‘touched’ by said words became loyal to the Minister from that day on. It was the time span of the last nine months of Malcolm’s life that Sara Mitchell became his personal secretary and Anas Luqman became his most trusted and beloved confidant. It was in these nine months a great love affair of the strange sort was formed, MS Sara Mitchell fell in love with Anas Luqman. Anas was a very debonair man, who made millions of dollars in that time span, during that time in the last months of Malcolm’s life he became the chauffeur of the sheik who was sent back with Malcolm from the time he spent in Saudi Arabia and the Mecca Hajj, Luqman had several apartments one he would house the woman who had fell in love with him, his reports says he treated her very nice but there was nothing personal, in other words he did not fall in love with her. After the death of Malcolm Luqman had to flee the country, you will see in the famous pictures of the event of Malcolm’s assassination, Luqman is the man leaning over him lying on the floor, it was from that time until the year 1995, forty years had passed and the two, MS Sara Mitchell and Anas Luqman met for the first time in 40 years at an Annual Malcolm X celebration In New York City.

10/5/2013 A new moon sixteen years after the 1996 meeting of the two. The writer drove to Macon Ga. finding the retirement complex, knocking on her door along with a friend (Reverend-Tony Wilder Sr.) informing her we were friends of Luqman to her surprise. We arranged a dinner date for later that day as we arrived before noon, we brought her fruit in a basket including a watermelon. We left as instructed to return in a few hours to take her to a place she suggested, our interview revealed the love she kept in her heart all these years for a man who has never really returned the sentiment, it was revealed they had been talking to each other throughout the years via phone and mail but had never met in person.
