Requiem For The Weasel

By M. Andre Moore, Journalist

George Bush isn’t having a good time. His beleaguered administration is coming undone at a time when the Democrats seem to be surging from the South, which, as of late, has produced presidents like plantation cotton.

I mentioned in my report "The Invasion of the Bawdy Snatchers" that the Central Intelligence Agency was lobbying Congress to unmask the source that exposed undercover CIA agent, Valerie Plame to Washington Post columnist Robert Novak. While Republican leaders in the House and Senate are hesitant to launch an inquiry, the grand jury has been dragging White House aides to court.

Press secretary, Scott McClellan and former press aide, Adam Levine, testified last Friday to a federal grand jury. Prosecutors will sweep more press liaisons into this sin bin before the month is through. At the time of writing no reporters have been subpoenaed or questioned.

Word in Washington has it that White House officials were angered by an article that was written by Valerie’s husband, Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV that appeared in the New York Times last July. Apparently, Mr. Wilson was sent to Niger by the CIA to investigate the possibility of African uranium being sent to Iraq to make weapons of mass destruction. In the article Wilson refuted the claim and that sent White House officials into such a tizzy that one of them leaked the name of his wife to the press.

The overtures here are ugly and you can bet good money that if a mole is found they will be flogged worse than any guest at Camp X-Ray. What’s interesting is that Washington is going after the source—not the press. I hope the Mounties are taking notes.
