One Man's Protest

By Sue E., Journalist

London, England - The original report was supposed to have been about a student protest outside the Houses of Parliament today, a day of a major debate and vote on the 'Top Up' fees Bill; which was being brought before the House on with there has been major opposition by government back-benches. The students were taking a last opportunity to voice there own opposition to this Bill which may cause them to have increased debt when they leave college or university and make it harder for less well-off students to afford to go on to further education in the future.

At 5.30pm Parliament Square was quiet, the students had been protesting at lunch-time and all that was left of their presence were discarded banners and placards .

Aftermath Of The Student's Protest

But a protest was taking place, across the road from the Houses of Parliament was a man carrying a placard . He was surrounded by banners and and placards pinned to railings and crash barriers. He was not alone, another man turned up with a tannoy (blowhorn).

A Wall Of Protest

On further inspection the placards had written on them "Look What You Have Done To Our Children" there was one with "Love and Peace" translated into Arabic and pictures of children with terrible birth defects . It was a protest against the damage done in Iraq and Afghanistan by the bombs dropped during the conflicts in these countries in recent times . I spoke to a man called Brian who told me that he had been there day and night for the last three years. He had a picture of himself holding his grandchild on the spot he had been standing all that time . He told me that the baby in the top right-hand corner of this picture was the child of his next door neighbour, and that someone had to bring to the attention of the politicians, what there actions had caused.

Children Of The War

He was getting ready for another nights vigil. He was wrapped up against the freezing cold weather and he was not alone tonight; but all the messages of thanks and gratitude showed that people may stand with him but essentailly that this was one man's protest.
