The Fortress: A Future Secured!

Yes it is true! Evidence of people having read The Fortress!

This was a very long day, but worth the effort. This was the day I became convinced that The Fortress newspaper has a definite future. The reason for this is simple: People are reading the paper! I had already seen a guy actively reading the paper at York University earlier on in the week. However, I also saw much more evidence on my return visit on Sunday. The photo above was evidence found at Ryerson University (York and Ryerson being my institutions of learning more than twenty years ago.....). The paper is opened at page two which means that he could have been reading myself, Mark, Sue.....I wonder who? In the same building I found a paper which had been moved and looked at with another and left (see photo below).

That paper did not get there by itself.

Coming upon these sites is an emotional experience for me. The first is thrilling; to actively come across evidence of people enjoying our newspaper! Later you just get a lump in your throat as you think about it, moving stuff. I guess it is just that you find it incredible to start with just the idea and gradually the thing becomes real, this is just the final act of that saga. A moving event as I saw this evidence at the two learning institutions I graduated from in the early eighties (York and Ryerson). Once a student and now trying to influence those young minds as a much older adult, I have come full circle. I really like to see our little paper displayed alongside other national papers, some of which were owned by some of the richest people on earth, quite the rush..... Anyway, enough of the sentimentality, I now present my Fortress travel log.

Centennial College in the city of Toronto.

My first stop today was at Centennial College which I selected simply because it was close to the burger place I was having lunch at that particular day. I simply place them in available empty racks that had not seen any thing in them in quite a while. An uneventful stop.

Robarts Library at the University Of Toronto.

I left our paper at various locations at the University Of Toronto. One location was at U of T's Scarborough Campus. The place gets a dishonorable mention for not having any parking except paid parking; and this on a Sunday..... Second stop was at Robarts Library in downtown Toronto. Again, I kept to the wire racks and possibly left a few lying around and then left a stack at a business building in the same general area.

Jorgenson Hall of Ryerson University.

Next stop was Ryerson University where I left at Jorgenson Hall, the Quadrangle, and the Media Centre. I tried to leave some papers at the old business building (where I did my stint in the late 1970s.....); however, they now lock this place up on Sundays. It was at Ryerson that I saw the most evidence of a readership today.

Entrance near the east end of York University.

The final stop was at York University. I tried to hit all the entrances to the residences and replenish the stocks in the market area (York Lanes). I also replenished by the library and finally left many issues at my old college: Bethune. It was at Bethune that I left some papers at the residence entrance only to see two attractive women immediately pick some up as I was leaving. I really had to move it at York as it is a huge campus and my legs were sore at the end

One long day and a decisive day for The Fortress. I now have to settle on real distribution, and things like that to make the paper more efficient and readable. I also would like to purchase one newspaper box for the entrance to our head office. We seem like orphans out there with no official place to call our own, that first box will be the first start in the right direction. I have to thank all the journalists who contribute to this paper as it could not be without them - all of you are the greatest! The Fortress has arrived!
