Toronto Protest for Jallikattu at Yonge-Dundas Square!
By Shane Murphy and Maurice Ali (Canada)
A family in support of Jallikattu!
Toronto, Canada: A large gathering was seen at Yonge-Dundas Square on January 22 (2017) supporting the practice of Jallikattu and the recent reinstatement of the bull fighting tradition in the state of Tamil Nadu. Jallikattu is a form of bull fighting or bull taming that is a 5000 year tradition in the Tamil culture. The practice was previously banned by the Supreme Court in India but was recently temporarily reinstated by the central government on the January 21 (2017). It was able to do this by issuing of an executive order that removed the designation of bulls from the law for a period of six months.
There was much anger at PETA.
Organizations such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) have been against Jallikattu as they say the animals are abused during the events with peppers rubbed into the bull’s eyes or other actions like breaking their tails for the event. The original India Supreme Court ruling stated that the practice was cruel to the animals. Jallikattu supporters say that it is they who insure to continued existence of the bulls and that the tradition dates back 5000 years and is a part of Tamil culture.
Another placard!
The Toronto protest was just one of many in the world and especially in India where it is hoped to legalize the event as soon as possible.
