The Day The U.S. Handed Iraq Back To The U.S.

by Maurice Ali, Journalist

Toronto, Canada - Freedom, Freedom - The U.S.A. has handed back Iraq to the people of Iraq! Of course all the U.S. military will stay there and get larger..... And so the brighter minds of this world decided to call a spade a spade and demonstrate their point at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto. Two days late because the U.S. moved the "hand over" early to spoil the event for those that took issue with the event. That did not spoil this protest as it went off as planned.

My first impression was the vast quantity of police at the site - Wow! There were probably more police than protestors.

If the Americans were so convinced at their helping of the Iraq people, then why the request for so many police officers.....guilt? Just who are the Americans afraid of.....these cute little girls who protested the event?

Or was this American style intimidation.....the girls were not phased and proudly paraded their placards for me to photograph.....under the watchful eyes and guns, of what looked like the entire provinces's SWAT team. Really, this truly was "over-kill" on the American's part, almost laughable if you were actually there..... This is Canada, not the States; remember that our government never went to war with Iraq..... This demonstration is very much in line with current government policy and in no way a threat to the peaceful goings on in our fair community.

A heavy handed police presence - How about a speech from an American official?

There were speeches by many and most were also seen at the anniversary protest just a few months before. They called for an end to the "real" occupation and refugee status for dissidents. The protest ended with everyone chanting to end the occupation. There was also talk about upcoming protests in the States and organizations who would participate.

One of the organizers of the protest has her say.

Now that the NDP (a socialist party) is working with the Liberals (current ruling party in Canada) at the national level, expect more of the same from our government, which is a "hands off" stance on the Iraq issue. Puppet governments are nothing new in the U.S.A. and this has all the characteristics of one; supposedly this group could ask the States to leave.....but, does anyone really expect that to happen..... The bottom line is that the current governing group were selected to govern in American interests until the well runs dry. Elections can be constructed by territory to prevent unpopular results, so don't believe that Iraq is free in any way, shape, or form. Iraq will never be free until a foreign army leaves it's territory. But that is the way with most occupation; a government which needs a foreign military to keep it in power will never be "by the people and for the people" think about it.

A patriot at the protest? - That flag is upside down!

What can our fellow Americans do about this? The Bush administration is headed for an election in a few months. Much of their foreign policy was never endorsed by the general public. The American media has been brow-beaten to the point you never see protests about American involvement in Iraq. If Americans can see the reality past their news shows; they may vote in change that may yet save the tarnished image of their nation. They have to correct the situation by themselves, and the world will judge them by the outcome of the upcoming vote. "Freedom is not free, with strength comes responsibility".
