Governments constituting committees to renege on poll promises!

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu (India)

A Prince never lacks legitimate reasons to break promises. – Niccolo Machiavelli

The quotation still lives strongly in present day politics in India. ‘Our Party Manifesto reflects strongly the mood of electorate’, said all parties during the electoral campaign. Now parties came to power and began to go back on the electoral promises legitimately. The ruling parties have the well-weaved reasons to break their promises legitimately. The governments began to constitute committees, sub-committees, organize public debates, meetings with the concerned authorities, prepare drafts, first hundred-day plans and so on. These are all the means of showing sincerity of the ruling governments that they are working for what they have promised. In reality, these tactics are meant to renege on the poll promises. This process is endless. Somebody said that the happiness of the society is the end of government.

‘People have been deceived by wide publicity, now they have lost faith in the ruling parties within a short period. No effective solutions to the problems people are facing. Parties in ruling must implement the manifestoes instead of just engaging themselves in delay tactics and filibusters combined with escapism’, demand Opposition Parties.

Opposition Parties along with civil societies, people’s organizations and other interested groups are taking to streets, organizing rallies, protests, dharnas and relay hunger strikes, demanding an immediate implementation of electoral promises as the ruling parties came to power in the name of change and development.

The new governments both in Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (New Telugu state) have promised development and zero graft. The way the political parties fought elections and came to power indicates whether they achieve the zero graft or not. Once again it is proved that truth exists and lies are created. The ruling parties may deny the existing truth and support the lies by saying that they have conceived now and will deliver baby (result) after full conception. It is one more logical answer to the Opposition Parties from the ruling parties.

• AAP slams NDA government for failures

AAP (Aam Admi Party) began slamming the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government for failing to bring back money stashed away in foreign banks and curb corruption even after completion of 100 days in office. The AAP has pointed out that the union government has not implemented so far any key recommendations as promised with regard to black money. The AAP criticized the NDA government for not controlling the prices of essential commodities.

The AAP alleged that the union government failed in bringing real changes in educational and health sectors and issues pertaining to women, children and the socially disadvantaged. They are same as before. The major allegation is that the union government is changing land acquisition act to favor the industrialists and ignoring the farmers, rural poor and environment. The other Opposition Parties are making similar allegations as the union government is reneging on the fulfillment of poll promises.

NDA is denying all these allegations and dismissing as meaningless. NDA supporters believe that the union government will be able to fix all these by implementing cleaner governance, by cutting down on the corruption and bureaucracy that prevents businesses from growing, and by improving infrastructure.

• Similar situation in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana

Opposition Parties are faulting the ruling parties both in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (new Telugu state) for resorting to delay tactics without bringing any real change in the lives of the people. Only committees and sub-committees to prolong the process and the most important promises such as loan-waiver to farmers and DWCRA groups, fee-reimbursement, unemployment allowance to the unemployed youth, 24-hour-power supply and water management for drinking and completion of irrigation projects (allocation of skimpy funds are still creeping at snail’s pace. Both governments Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in Telangana are long on promises and short on delivery.

The announcements of both governments in AP and Telangana are promising and the only thing is those promises need to be translated into action effectively with a time-bound programme, the public voice opines. It adds that the common people are very hopeful about the new governments.

• New Governments may end up being more status quo than change!

The new governments are still busy with exposing the serious dishonesty of the previous governments. Now they say that they need time to bridge the gaps and unite the cuts which were created in the past for the vested interests. The sources of ruling parties are stating that the Opposition Parties are simply making attempts to try and vilify the governments.

The big question is whether new governments would create any economic miracles. Many Indians believe that the previous governments have failed and it's time for a change. So, Indians voted out the previous parties because they were fed up with its economic mismanagement and corruption, and voted in alternative parties because they thought that these parties would change things.

According to the serious analysts, the fact is Indian government is one of the world's largest bureaucracies and it is dealing with very basic problems at every level tremendously. There are big challenges for India to come out with flying colors. It's always easy to overestimate the good and the bad of new governments, but more often those governments express a lot more policy continuity than they intended and promised. But people find out soon enough, for better or worse. The need of the hour is to live in reality than in publicity and fluency.
