People raising voices against governments!

‘It is easier to fight for one’s principles than to live up to them’. ― Alfred Adler

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu (India)

The best way to succeed in life is to act on the advice we give to others. Equal application can be exercised even in politics. The political parties fulfill it excellently and effectively when they are in opposition. It is common for parties to be pro-people when they are in Opposition and anti-people when they are in power. The parties in power conveniently forget the principles they talked about at length when in opposition. Many feel that it is a common phenomenon in the arena of today’s politics.

As usual, the disgruntled people are raising their voice against the anti-people policies the governments are adopting. The parties promised to offer a different government during the electoral campaign and the same was mentioned in their party manifestoes. After forming the governments both in Delhi and in the states, their attitude is no different from that of the past governments. They are pursuing the same policies for which the earlier governments were knocked down by the people.

NDA (National Democratic Alliance) Government led by BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in the Center (Delhi) hiked petrol, diesel prices and rail fares. The pro-people parties and peoples’ groups took to the streets, staged demonstrations, dharnas and rallies demanding for the roll-back of hiked prices. The opposition parties alleged that the budget was pro-rich and the union government was resorting to anti-people policies and burdening the common people to favor the big corporates in the country.

There are allegations that the government in Rajasthan changed the labor laws and the union government is trying to change land acquisition laws to favor industrialists. In a recent annual conference, some senior political leaders have alleged that at least ten plus communal clashes occurred in the last two months across the country, which is a bit alarming and posing threat to minorities. Some minority leaders launched a scathing attack on some governments in some states that they are implementing hidden agenda, because of which the security of minorities is at risk. In some states, the leaders of ruling party are engaging in the politics of blackmail and extortion instead of fulfilling the aspirations of the people the post-elections.

‘A senior economist says that the policies of successive governments, particularly in the post-liberalization period, began to affect the living standards of people in rural areas. The aim of the policies is to displace the farmers from their land and turn them as laborers in their own land. The governments are giving lakhs of acres of land to corporate companies and diluting rural job scheme gradually’.

‘The left parties are also alleging that ‘National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREG) introduced by the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government is being diluted by the Modi-led BJP government. There is no clarity to strengthen PDS (Public Distribution System). The BJP government is ignoring the steep rise in poverty and hunger in the country. The economy of the farming community was far better during colonial period than in the independent India, they remarked’.

Situation is still slippery in AP

Things are taking ugly shape slightly in Andhra Pradesh. Voice for Capital City in the region of Rayalaseema is gaining significance, in addition to separate statehood. Political instability is still continuing because of no Capital City and proper mobilization of funds for the fulfillment of electoral promises to farming community, self-help groups and unemployed youth. A debate is raging in political circles, on television talk-shows and on social media over whether the political leaders have been playing a double game after elections to further exploit millions of people. The government had not taken any steps to bail out the farmers and self-help groups from financial doldrums. There is a concern that the ruling parties failed to impress upon the governments both in Delhi and in the states to ensure the required steps to benefit the common people. There is a strong feeling that the moves of government are just misleading the people with tall promises and later constituting committees for delaying the implementation of the promises. The people and opposition parties began to flay the government for having silent on the most pertinent issues and policies. A section of educationalists is finding fault with the government for appointing only bureaucrats to take decisions on policies. They are demanding for appointing academicians to take advice on policies relating to higher education, as the education plays a major role in the development of any state or nation.

The opposition parties are gearing up to nail both the union and the state governments, accusing of adopting many ‘anti-people policies’ and chalking out action plan to take on several policies of the government. There is a call that the farming community, the rural poor, the unemployed youth and sections of people ignored should unite to fight against the ‘anti-people policies’ in the country.

• Opposition Parties should play a constructive role

The parties in power argue that the opposition political parties should commend the government where it performs well. The parties in opposition have a significant role to ensure political stability both in the states and country for economic growth and pro-people policies to thrive and take forward as well. They should practice impartiality in viewing the achievements and failures of governments, instead of misleading the people. They have time for five years to oppose the government and raise voice when system ceases to promote common good. This is too early to assess the performance of the governments. The parties in power must strive to fulfill the electoral promises without resorting to political hypocrisy and Fabian tactics.
