"Live Life For Today, But Remember There is a Tomorrow" - Jennifer Howitt
By Elizabeth Voce
Nickelback has recently released a song which talks about living for today. In the past couple of years I've lost a lot of people in my life. From friends, to my father-in-law, to a little girl in my Sunday School class, it's been a heavy couple of years. From cancer, to pneumonia, to muscular dystrophy, to murder, I feel like I've been through it all (knock on wood).
What I have taken away from this is that I need to make the absolute most of my time that I have been given here on Earth. Some might take this to mean eat, drink, and be merry, but I've taken a different approach. I realize that my time is precious, so I try to spend it helping others. This includes volunteering, and even just little random acts of kindness. I help people pick up the books that they drop. I stop to let people turn, especially when they've had their indicator on for ages. I also try to make the effort to honestly ask how people are doing, and actually listen to the answer.
It is my hope that by doing these things, life will be just a bit better for those people I encounter. I truly believe that if everyone were to just take a bit of time to help others, and put their selfish desires to the side, then we would really start to see those changes that Obama keeps on preaching about. Acts of kindness are not something you have done, but something you are doing. It is a perpetual process of putting others first.
With society becoming such a depressing place (job losses, foreclosures, etc.), we need to start doing little things that will make this planet a little better. Our time here is limited, so how do you want to leave your mark? |
