IAIJ Launches Citizen Journalist Initiative!

By Maurice Ali, President: International Association Of Independent Journalists Inc.

The International Association Of Independent Journalists Inc. (IAIJ) is proud to announce the start of the "Citizen Journalist Initiative."

The Citizen Journalist Initiative will be an on-going program to help define, refine, and try to institutionalize the concept of the "Citizen Journalist" into programs and mandates of organizations and institutions world-wide that deal with journalist issues. IAIJ is international with members around the world and thus this initiative becomes quite daunting when you start to see how vast this task is before us. However we can start with the major organizations that protect journalist rights and freedoms and go from there. Having a generally accepted definition for the term "Citizen Journalist" makes international correspondence and legal issues of the use of the term more concise/consistent and cements the term into a form that can be archived into formal language once and for all.

What is a Citizen Journalist? We can start from a very basic and simple definition:

A "Citizen Journalist" is any individual who actively disseminates news and information to fellow citizens.

A very simple definition is the best start. Complex definitions open the door to exclusion of that definition for an individual if a part of the definition is not relevant and so on. So we will start with that and move on to the advocacy. Our first involvement was with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO at its Annual General Meeting (of which we are an Institutional Member) and hopefully proceed to UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and other UNESCO Commissions around the world to formally identify the term and importance of the role of the Citizen Journalist. We will then identify and lobby other international organizations/institutions and regional organizations/institutions to formally identify the term and importance of the role of the Citizen Journalist. There is no set time limit or scope of organizations or institutions we can petition.

This will be an on-going program and mandate for IAIJ as we continue to educate, and advocate the importance of the Citizen Journalist in today's world!
