Aldermaston 2004

By Sue E., Journalist

A stage act at the protest and march.

Bored looking tourists watch the show?

London, England - Another trip up to Trafalgar Square for the Aldermaston 2004 Rally a prelude to a march to the British (once) secret weapons facility at Aldermaston in Berkshire . The crowd was small but cheerful on this cold Good Friday lunchtime , there were about at most a couple of thousand holding onto their banners from the young to the elderly, listening to the speeches from the main stage in front of Nelsons Column . This was no Stop the War protest but a protest against the prolifiration of nuclear weapons and many of the speeches railed at the US and British governments at their own hypocrisy in the face of trying to prevent 'rogue' states from arming themselves with WMD they themselves are increasing their nuclear arsenal . Special mention was made of the new 'secret' weapons at Lakenheath in Suffolk , a RAF base controlled by the US for the US Air Force .

The speeches begin.

One sign and the message.

I saw an American flag and thought it was perhaps someone doing a 'one man' anti - protest but instead found that instead of the stars there were all the logos of the world corporate giants . There were as always groups for the Palestinians and against the Iraq Invasion as all roads seem to lead back to these two conflicts , but also there was a lone Spaniard waving his banner and couple from Japan who had their banner at their feet as well as the many Brits from all over the country .

Quakers For Peace.

One Person's rant on their sign.

I waited until the final speech by Bruce Kent from CND before leaving a small band of marches to make their way this weekend to Aldermaston .

American Flag with Corporate logos for the stars.

Musicians For Peace.

Old folks have their say.
